This collection contains the diary, 1861-1865, of Henry Robinson Berkeley of Hanover County, Va. Recorded in three volumes, Berkeley's diary documents his service in the Virginia Amherst Artillery Battery. Included in the diary are descriptions of camp life and the Amherst Artillery's role in the battles of Fredericksburg, the Seven Days', Gettysburg, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Other items in the collection include a school notebook, 1859-1864, containing Latin exercises and notes concerning Berkeley's war service; photographs of Berkeley as a Confederate soldier and in later life; and a drawing, 1865, of the Confederate officers' barracks at Fort Delaware, Del.
